The area was once covered in shallow seas, which left behind its gypsum-rich sea bed. More than 800 animal species can be found here today. Fossil records indicate natives lived here as early as 16,000 years ago where they were known to hunt many now extinct species such as ground sloths, camels, sabertooth tigers, and mammoths.
